The quote from Idah on the data/IT challenges of making a subscription business surprises me so much. I'm not saying I.T. is easy, but most US companies (in my experience) can get this done with a relatively small budget. You would never hear a US CEO make that comment because it would make them seem incompetent.
Clearly Idah is not incompetent and this is a real problem in Africa, hence the market opportunity. I'd love to hear more detail on what unique challenges African digital enterprises face. Lack of engineering talent? Internet infrastructure? Internet access? It could be that there aren't available out-of-the-box software products that make this much easier. Based on the Netflix section of this article it may be a bit of everything.
Smart move from Netflix. Maybe Nigerian Telcos could jump on this, because this means more heavy data consumption. It could be a new Netflix mobile data plan or some sort of partnership.
